Principal Susan Felder

Welcome back! We are excited to begin a new school year filled with the joy of learning. As you know, at P.S. 40 we constantly strive to create a community of learners that exemplifies our school mission's key concepts: academic achievement, social responsibility, and student self-esteem. These tenets are an integral part of our daily lives at school.

Last year's Student Council discussed the three key concepts and wrote them in kid-friendly terms. Below is the P.S. 40 Kids' Mission statement that you will see when you enter the building and that will be given to each teacher to post in their classrooms.

At P.S. 40 children are learning, safe, and happy. We believe in:
  • Making a way everyone can learn in their own style
  • Feeling proud of ourselves
  • Being respectful of and responsible to our learning community

While our students are learning every day, our teachers too make themselves smarter and smarter each year through professional development and study with colleagues. Every year our teachers focus on a specific area to further develop their professional practice. This year our main focus is on spelling. Over the course of the past couple of years, we have read professional books on spelling in study groups and developed our classroom word walls as one spelling tool. This year we will focus on the developmental stages of spelling as we work toward improving students' abilities in this subject area.

Other 2012-13 focuses include differentiating instruction to meet the needs of our diverse group of learners and continuing to enhance parent-school interactions. Our three parent initiatives of last year will continue - Schmoozin' with Susan, Learning Walks, and Parent Choice Time Workshops. We will add Grandparents' Day to our calendar. Stay tuned!

All in all, we expect yet another fabulous year, and look forward to what lies ahead!
